Armed Citizen

The robber who burst inside a food market waving a gun seemed surprised to find eight shoppers inside. He ordered everyone to the floor, firing shots in the customers' direction and twice shooting store owner Mustapha Kassou. Police say that's when a man with a concealed-carry permit leapt to his feet and drew his AS-cal. Colt revolver. He told the robber to drop the gun. When the robber didn't comply, the armed citizen shot him, took his gun and held him for police. Onlookers encouraged the armed citizen to shoot the robber again, but he kept his cool and exercised better judgment. Kassou is recovering from his injuries. "[The armed citizen] saved a lot of lives, he said. "He was like an angel who came to save everybody. (Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, VA, 07/15/09)

Two men learned their neighbor had just filled a prescription for painkillers and quickly hatched a plan to steal them. Perhaps the men should've thought things through a little more carefully; they were aware that their victim owned a handgun. One of the men waited in a car while his accomplice entered the home and began viciously punching and choking the homeowner. Battered, the homeowner retrieved his handgun and shot the intruder, killing him. The other suspect was nabbed shortly thereafter. The homeowner was treated for injuries. An electrician was asleep with his wife when they were awakened by a knock at the door. The man feared something wasn't quite right about the early morning visitor, so he put a handgun in his pocket just in case. As he opened the door, police say two suspects tried to push their way inside. The man drew the gun from his pocket and fired twice, hitting both suspects. The suspects fired a return shot as they fled. One of the suspects died nearby. Police were seeking his accomplice. (News Sentinel, Knoxville, TN, 08/06/09)

Police say Henry Ward was lucky to be armed when a home invader attacked him with a piece of concrete. The bizarre event started when the suspect drove his pickup into a creek early on~ morning. He ditched the vehicle and began pounding the door of Ward's home. When Ward answered, the suspect began beating him with a piece of concrete. The assailant entered the home and approached the bedroom, where Ward's wife was calling 9-1-1. Ward quickly retrieved his .380-cal. pistol. He ran inside and shouted at the suspect, who charged him. Ward shot the suspect three times. The intruder ran outside and collapsed on the lawn. He'll face charges after his release from the hospital. (Stilwell Democrat-Journal, Stilwell, OK, 08/29/09)

When a young woman ran to 70-year-old Virginia Hawes' home and said her boyfriend was assaulting her, Hawes phoned the police. Authorities say the young woman waited with Hawes, but her rampaging boyfriend showed up before police could arrive. Hawes warned him to stay off her property, but he ignored her. Hawes's 23-year-old grandson picked up a shovel and tried to block the boyfriend's advance, but he pushed the grandson and took the shovel. With the situation quickly escalating, Hawes ran inside to get her .38-cal. revolver."1 put the gun up and told him to get back or I will shoot, she recalls. "He called me an old [expletive] and he kept coming at me and holding the shovel. Hawes fired a shot. "He went down like a tree, she says. "I didn't want to hurt him but I didn't want him to hurt me. An intoxicated man got into a fight with his girlfriend as she was driving him home from a comedy club. He demanded to be let out of the vehicle and his girlfriend complied. He walked to a rural residence and pounded on the door, claiming to be a police officer who wanted to ask them a question. When that didn't work, he said he had a knife and would stab the home's occupants. The male homeowner replied he had a gun, and he would shoot the suspect if he came inside. "The only smart decision he made was not to enter that home, Johnson County, Ind., Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Doug Cox said. "He's alive today because he didn't enter that house. Police found the suspect stumbling down the road. He told officers he would beat them up and claimed to be an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation looking into a crime. Police checked with the FBI-the suspect is not an agent. (WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN, 08/13/09)

Standing Guard

Wayne LaPierreSilencing The First Amendment

One of the radical ideological appointees embedded in the Obama political machine is a man with a dream for the First Amendment. His name is Mark Lloyd, and as Obama's "Diversity Czar" at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), he plans to wield immense power over the way Americans can communicate.

In his vision, a day would come when talk radio would be replaced with government-approved "progressive" local radio and by a smothering National People's Radio.

In his vision ... Rush Limbaugh would be gone. Glenn Beck, gone. Lou Dobbs, off the air. Sean Hannity, silenced. Laura Ingraham, history. The networks and satellite broadcasters that now carry those broadcasts would be broken up, and their affiliate stations "delicensed, replaced by "local" licensees-all in the name of diversity.

Free choice would be dead, as would the free flow of ideas. At the same time, government radio would be bloated with funds taken as punitive license fees from remaining commercial broadcasters. In the Orwellian name of "diversity, censorship will reign.

It is Katrina for the First Amendment. Well before President Obama began packing the federal bureaucracies with his personal "czars, I warned of the influence of the George Soros-bankrolled Center for American Progress (CAP).

The man who heads that far-left think tank, John Podesta, ran Obama's postelection transition team and was key to filling positions in the Obama Chicago style federal machine. As White House chief of staff, he was one of Bill Clinton's hatchet men on federal gun control.

Among the most critical targets for Podesta's transition was the Federal Communications Commission. His most important appointee to the FCC was Mark Lloyd, who as a CAP fellow, authored a George Soros-financed war plan to kill talk radio.

In his powerful FCC post, Lloyd is shaping the critical components of the Obama administration's backdoor censorship of electronic and digital communications. He is doing it through the "regulatory" process-outside any specific congressional authority. FCC has the power to determine who gets broadcast licenses and who is barred. Political misuse of that power is the key.

In terms of the sanctity of the Constitutional right of free speech as we know it today, Lloyd's views are scary. In his 2006 book, "Prologue to a Farce: Communication and Democracy in America; he wrote: .

"It should be clear ... that my focus here is not freedom of speech or the press. This freedom is all too often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the critical examination of other communications policies.

In Lloyd's worldview and from his prism of intolerance, "[T]he purpose of free speech is warped to protect global corporations and block rules that would promote democratic governance.

Lloyd's 2007 declaration of war against broadcast free speech, "The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio, came under scathing criticism from many true free speech advocates, including the NRA. But keep in mind that with this administration, criticism is always treated as nothing more than a "distraction" from the relentless agenda.

Lloyd's attack on commercial talk-radio calls for a redistribution of broadcast licenses-taking them from commercial broadcasters carrying hugely successful commentators and giving those licenses to local "progressives, who otherwise would have no audience at all. Lloyd whined about the fact that left-wing Air America Radio drew audiences in "progressive" metropolitan areas that were so small as to be unmeasurable. Talkers like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity in those same cities garnered huge audiences. For Lloyd, market share is a myth.

With that as evidence, Lloyd declared, " ... that conservative talk radio dominates the airwaves of our country to the detriment of informed public discourse and the First Amendment.

Got that? The free market of ideas-where individual Americans choose with their radio dials-exists "to the detriment of the First Amendment.

Condemning what he calls the "power of right-wing talk radio and their echo chambers in the conservative blogosphere, Lloyd has demanded that commercial broadcasters " ... should pay to support public broadcasters who will operate on behalf of the local community ... We want either clear rules that promote these First Amendment values or a reasonable payment to the public for the use of its property. According to CNSNews.com, "reasonable payment" amounts to " ... a sum equal to their (commercial broadcasters) total operating costs.

With Lloyd empowered as "Diversity Czar" at the FCC and Soros ultimately pulling the strings-this effort in the coming months to turn radical anti-First Amendment theory into public policy will move at a rapid pace. It will be merely one part of a flood of "Change" aimed at silencing any political opposition at any cost, especially my voice and your voice.

As freedom-loving Americans, we, the people, must put our members of Congress on notice. Stop the FCC's backdoor attempt to choke off talk radio. And protect the Internet. As Benjamin Franklin put it: "Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech. We must not let that happen-not today-not ever.

The President's Column

Ronald L. Schmeits

Election Day: Prepare Today To Prevail Tomorrow

In just one year, you have the chance to profoundly affect the future of your freedoms.

Twelve months from now, in one of the most closely watched and consequential elections in our lifetimes, Americans will elect all 435 members of Congress, at least 37 U.S. senators, 36 governors and thousands of state legislators, city mayors and local officials.

Those leaders will decide the future of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms-the one right that makes our homes and families safe, and that keeps our country free.

As president of this association, I'm calling on you to make a personal commitment now to do all in your power to influence those elections and ensure our freedoms win in every race.

Whether you're a Republican, Democrat, independent or "none of the above, whether you're wealthy or you're of more limited means-regardless-you can make a real difference in this fight to protect our Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms and our freedom to hunt. Fulfilling that duty can take many forms.

Many of us have been blessed with money that we can invest in freedom's future. Whether it's through our careers, businesses or simple financial good fortune, many of us have the cash to contribute to political action committees that support pro-gun candidates, or directly to the candidates' campaigns.

More and more nowadays, elections are won and lost by virtue of how much each campaign spends, because that money pays for crucial communications, voter education and get-out-the-vote efforts that bring people to the polls on Election Day.

So if you've been blessed with a lucrative career, I ask you to join me in building a financial war chest to defend the freedoms that have made our career successes possible.

Make a contribution to the NRA Institute for Legislative Action to help fund aggressive, effective lobbying, bill analysis and advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. Then back it up with political contributions to support direct election activities both for and against candidates.

Consider becoming a part of the Ring of Freedom, our association's premier donor recognition society. Think about making a contribution-in some cases, tax-deductible-to The NRA Foundation to support our vital gun safety, hunter training, marksmanship, conservation and other educational activities. Buy an NRA magazine subscription for your local public library to help educate your community with the truth about your firearms and your freedoms.

Whether you're helping defeat a gun ban politician, educating congressional staffers on what a gun-related bill really means, or spreading the word about how firearms and the freedom to own them save lives and safeguard freedom, your financial support right now can make a major difference on Election Day 201 O.

Not all of us have been blessed with the financial wherewithal to do all that we want. But many of us have been blessed with time-the time to do the things we want in our lives.

If that describes you, I urge you to consider all the ways you can help make a difference on Election Day simply by giving a bit of your time each week between now and next November.

Go to www.NRA-ILA.org and sign up to receive, via e-mail, special NRA-ILA "Grassroots Alerts" customized to where you live.

These rapid-response alerts will give you late-breaking news on important legislative activities in your state legislature and in Congress; the dates and locations of pro-gun rallies and town hall meetings near you; contact information for you to coordinate your efforts with local NRA-ILA Election Volunteer Coordinators, and more.

Consider volunteering your time as a part of NRA-ILA Front Lines, a corps of the most dedicated volunteers who work vigorously to defend and advance our freedoms at the local, state and federal levels.

Visit NRA News on the Internet at www.NRANews.com. or on Sirius Patriot 144. Every weekday, you'll get the most up-to-date news available anywhere on your firearms, your right to own them and your freedom to hunt, with in-depth reporting from the United Nations to Capitol Hill, and from your statehouse down to your hometown.

Then, once you're armed with the facts, I urge you to spread the word to your friends and fellow hunters and shooters. Get them informed and involved, and get them to vote accordingly.

Do your part now and, together on Election Day, we can show freedom's friends and foes the awesome political power behind our slogan, ''I'm the NRA and I vote!"
